Starting Again, But Not From Scratch

My First Hike Back on the Trail.

Today, I hiked 4.2 beautiful miles up Mount Little Si in Washington—my first hike since restarting my training journey. This trail has always been my baseline. It’s where I go to check in with myself, especially when life has paused my momentum and I need to begin again. And believe me, I’ve restarted more times than I can count—this must be the millionth (or billionth!) time.

This particular reset follows eye surgery and recovery, which came after one of the most incredible experiences of my life: summiting around Manaslu, Nepal, in November 2024. What makes this new beginning different is that I’m bringing something powerful into it—the same principles I once used to lead major transformations in corporate America. Now, I’m applying them to build not only my fitness, but a whole new life and business. And I’m sharing it with you—my not-yet-found, but joyfully sought-after community.

If you’re reading this, and you’re on your own journey to start again—whether it’s in fitness, career, or life—I invite you to walk with me. This might just help your path, too.

🔍 Identify the Goal

My goal is clear: to rebuild my mountaineering fitness and prepare for the climbs and adventures ahead—stronger, more aware, and more sustainable than ever. But this isn’t just about reaching summits. It’s about building a company rooted in purpose, adventure, and the belief that leadership and resilience don’t only belong in boardrooms—they belong on trails, in transitions, and in every new beginning.

📈 On Track (Metrics)

Little Si helps me track progress. Compared to my last post-recovery attempt, I shaved off 10% of my total time—a huge win. More than the numbers, I felt stronger. My pace was more consistent, my energy stayed high, and recovery afterward was smooth.

✅ What’s Going Well

So much, already:

  • I’ve rebuilt my routines based on an honest analysis of my current state.

  • My motivation is intrinsic, and it’s sticking.

  • I’m applying systems thinking to my fitness, just like I used to apply to organizational turnarounds.

  • My mindset has shifted—I’m no longer chasing outcomes; I’m investing in the process.

🔄 Adapt and Sustain

This time, I’m not just training my body—I have designed a sustainable system. I’m keeping what’s working (early hikes, meal prep, flexible scheduling) and tweaking what needs improvement (gear load distribution, rest days). I’ll keep checking in with metrics, adapting with intention, and sharing my progress.

This journey feels so different because I’ve changed—not just physically, but in how I approach setbacks and growth. I’m no longer starting over; I’m starting forward. And if you’re on your own path of rebuilding or redefining, I hope you’ll find encouragement here.

Let’s summit something meaningful—together.
